2nd Annual Nanofest

Like a lot of you hard working service industry slaves, I had to work while the friends went on the weekend camping trip to Beaver Lake. So, unlike my usual, early week blog about the great outdoors, I’ll talk to you a little about Nanofest, the place where beer is born.

On Sunday, August 29th, instead of going to church, the wife and I decided to get mexican food and walk around the Southeast. We wandered down to the Green Dragon, Distillery Row, up to Doug Fir and down Burnside to Screen Door. What inspired this grand walking tour? The lovely people at the Nanofest.

For all of you who didn’t know (like me), there’s this little tiny festival of microbrewers and home brewers that meet every year to celebrate how good they are at stuff. This year they met in front of the Green Dragon, home to 50 of the best beers you can find on tap. The cool thing is this, you pay 10 bucks, five of which goes to Buckman Elementary, and you get five taster tickets. Each ticket allows you to have four ounces of rare and delicious brew from the great Northwest. Vancouver, Corvallis, Hillsboro, Salem, Eugene, Portland, Bend and Beaverton were all represented, and to give you an idea of the scale of brewers, the biggest name I heard there was the Oregon Brew Crew.

If you want something to put on next years calendar, keep an eye out for Portland’s Nanofest. I didn’t see it coming, but I’m glad I stumbled into it. Sometimes this town surprises me, in a good way.

I really liked that it was all local volunteers, just helping the community get their beer on!
