French-kiss The Lusty Lady Goodbye

Sad news today dudes. Your favorite Seattle strip club, the Lusty Lady, will shutter permanently on June 27.

We never had a chance to step into the Lusty Lady, which is an absolute shame and will hopefully not be the case by the time the venerable marquee dims its lights for the last time. It was, and in many ways remains, the most progressive strip club in America. Dancers agree upon most if not all of the working conditions; the club holds open-house style “Play Days” where the dancers show customers around on a “behind the scenes tour”; workers get paid a living wage without having to work for tips (the customers are often behind glass, peep-show style); and the clubs double as homes for erotic and exhibitionist art.

Strip clubs are an essential cog in Portland’s economy, and many of them would do well to emulate the Lusty. And it’s marquee.
